They do notify you, but the company were having technical problems so the notification didn’t come until it was nearly too late!

I almost had the same thing happen to me. I was notified by Godaddy that my cc info was out of date 2 days before it was to expire. So I was lucky to have avoided the situation, but I’m sure it is quite common.
