Once we moved away from magic and towards scientific medicines, there was far less death for the newborns and this pushed up the overall age of the population. Way back when, if you got to your 30th birthday you were pretty much assured of a long life - barring war, murder or plague, of course! Here, Abraham is indeed God's friend and he gets such huge perks for it. I have read the Bible before, and the Old Testament and New Testament seem quite different in flavor, and no guesses which one I prefer.
