The host also thinks it's a good idea to offer his daughter or the dude's concubine (why he thought the dude would agree to this is beyond me), but in the end they gave the concubine to the mob and they proceeded to gang rape her all night. By morning she was back at the door. The holy dude sees her and literally says "Get up, it's time to go". But the concubine is dead. And he just shrugged it off. The thing about dying early came about because statisticians looked at the whole population. Once we moved away from magic and towards scientific medicines, there was far less death for the newborns and this pushed up the overall age of the population. Way back when, if you got to your 30th birthday you were pretty much assured of a long life - barring war, murder or plague, of course!
